High School Dance Class, Cuba (2015) by Peter Tilgner
HobokenArts™ featured artist Peter Tilgner is showing his Cuba Today pictures which are the result of a recent in-depth journey that took him from from Santiago De Cuba and Guantanamo in the West, to Camaguey, Santa Clara, and onto Havana in the East. It provided him with the opportunity to visit and speak with Cuban educators, artists/photographers, dancers, singers, and musicians all the while photographing the “Cubanos” he met along the way. The resulting merged image pictures in this exhibition are a testament to the richness of the Cuban peoples heritage, culture, history, and ingenuity. They also show the ever present Cuban government reminders of their revolution and affects of the U.S. embargo.
Two of Peter's photographs from this collection are included in the 87 works selected from more than 1,000 that were submitted by artists from every region of the US, as well as Canada, Europe, and Asia. States curator Karen Wilkin, “The submissions to ViewPoints 2017 reflected today’s multivalence of conception, approach, and medium, so the selection of work to be exhibited had to honor widely differing possibilities without compromising aesthetic values.” The result is an exhibition of work that cuts across a broad range of media and techniques, including oil painting, various forms of photography, clay, fabric, metal, wood, and mixed media.
The 20th Annual Open Juried Exhibition, “ViewPoints 2017,” is presented by Studio Montclair. It will run from June 1 through June 30, 2017 at aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art, 591 Broad Street, Newark, NJ. An opening reception and announcement of cash awards will take place on Saturday, June 3 from 6 to 9pm.
